NOVEL. JEKYLL AND JILL, 2019. 156 PAGES.

A city next to an estuary. For a writer, it’s an abstract piece: squat and bright, it spreads homogenously across the land, away from the water. A hive of ambition, the city also offers a cornucopia of literary journeys, inspiring one to include it in their work.

Back when he lived there, Sergio Chejfec wrote Five. Changeable as the city in question, it is a tale told in a series of brief, unfinished, unpredictable stories. That saga was continued in another narrative: Note, which actually looked backwards. And now comes 5. A treatise on memory and the unstable nature of all journeys, the writer character muses on other pasts, nocturnal wandering and social wakes: a stream of ephemeral, elusive plots.

Sitting somewhere between the initial venture (Five) and (Note), 5 explores the meaning of that literary apprenticeship, spanning a breach in more than just time: that between an author of a form and a form of author.
