Ernesto Sabato's memoir is a unique book: his spiritual will and testament. It is the story of a young man born in La Pampa who successfully embarks upon a successful career in science, even getting an opportunity to work at the Curie Centre in Paris, only to discover the surrealists and bravely abandon science in favour of literature and art. After his first novel was rejected by a series of publishers, he eventually earned recognition and praise from writers of the calibre of Albert Camus and Thomas Mann. This is also the story of a rebellious man who was attracted from an early age to anarchism and left-wing movements but who soon saw through the mask of Soviet totalitarianism and who, as an old man, showed tremendous courage in chairing the commission investigating the horror of state terror in Argentina, revealing the true extent of the genocide. The combination of ethical rigour, lyricism and a commitment to social solidarity makes Before the End unique. This is the essential legacy of a great writer to future generations.
