The so-called "Christ of Elqui" arrived at the mining office of Los dones with his long black hair and beard as if he were a biblical prophet. However, this time he did not only come to evangelize and to preach, but he also had a mission.

In the mining explotation of Providencia, better known as La pioja [The louse] because of its miserable condition, lived a girl that was meant to be his disciple, his "apostle", Magalena Mercado, his own Maria Magdalena.
The Christ of Elqui was not even 10 years old when he began to preach to his friends. "This child will be a saviour", prophesied the midwife of the village where he was born. Years later, after his adored mother’s death, he abandonned everything and withdrew into himself for many years, in the valley of Elqui. During this period as a hermit, he had some spiritual visions: he believed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and he had the mission to preach to mankind.

"My brothers, I am who am, a poor Christ, without any money, a forgiving Christ, patient and good, a Chilean Christ".
