Craig, the only detective from Argentina, is unable to attend and instead he sends Salvatrio, who is the naive narrator of the story. Salvatrio slowly discovers that the detectives’ world is not ruled solely by reasoning, that there are petty quarrels among them and among their assistants.Very soon, a murder will force the detectives to focus on the enemies of the Exposition and of a gigantic tower being built by a certain engineer named Eiffel. Salvatrio realizes that alongside the investigative arts, the criminal arts are just as much in evidence.
