NON FICTION. AUSTRAL, 2004. 224 PAGES.
“This book,” says Ernesto Sabato in his prologue, “is made up of variations on a single theme, a theme that has obsessed me since I started writing: why, how and for whom is fiction written?” He doesn’t answer these questions with an externally formulated doctrine – although it is certainly a rigorous, profound answer – but in an especially vivacious way, responding to external and internal stimuli, in notes that – as Sabato says – “are somewhat similar to a writer’s diary and are more than anything similar to the thoughts that writers have always expressed in their confidential correspondence and letters.”
Thus, from brief, almost aphoristic paragraphs, to very detailed commentaries – expressing argument and analysis – on contemporary events and universal problems, The Writer and His Ghosts offers an examination of Sabato’s most characteristic preoccupations about the literature of our time and the office of being a writer.
