The stories of Jorge Consiglio are breath-taking portraits of the moments in life when men and women stand, consciously or otherwise, on the threshold of an entirely different existence. His subjects are people who have drifted away from the path they once thought was laid out for them, who suddenly find themselves in the wilderness, powerless to return and beholden to the vagaries of the dark fate that has led them there, unable to understand why life has done this to them. Although the author, who writes in dry, rasping prose that makes every detail and event sharp and memorable, regards his characters with empathy, he also denies them strokes of luck or salvation they haven't earned, making The Other Side a moving, satisfying and fulfilling read of a kind rarely seen in Argentine literature.
