The cultural catastrophe of Iraq in 2003 was an event that shocked the world. Once Baghdad was captured by troops from the United States, a wave of pillaging broke out that resulted in the disappearance or destruction of thousands of works of art at the Archeological Museum. Soon after that tragedy, thousands of archeological sites were looted. When Fernando Báez arrived in Baghdad, the end of the war had been declared but he found that the post-war period was even more violent . The overall scene was devastating. He immediately wrote down his detailed account of the events of the terrible ransacking and destruction of Iraq’s cultural heritage.
