The voices and testimonies interwoven into this novel narrate a brief and traumatic revolutionary event of the 1960s: the Guerrilla Army of the People which, in 1963, attempted to reproduce in the isolated jungle of the Argentinean province of Salta, in the north of the country, the rural guerrilla movement of Che Guevara. Just across the border where Che will meet his death several years later in Bolivia. Argentinean journalist Jorge Ricardo Masetti travels to Cuba, where he is dazzled by the revolution of Fidel Castro and even renamed by Che himself the “Second Commander.” Under this name he leads his comrades-inarms into an inferno unforeseen by all, which will make clear in all its cruelty reality’s resistance to change. Rendered by Jorge Lanata in stark prose, the book examines the Argentinean militancy of the 1960s and 1970s through a labyrinthine riddle of anecdotes, letters, reports, manifestos, dialogues and slogans that challenge the reader to interrogate the dark and tragic connection between violence and revolution.
