In 1956, at twenty-three, Manuel Puig leaves the port city of Buenos Aires for a scholarship at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. During the six years of this intense European experience, he sends his family a hundred and seventy-two letters –all signed with his nickname, Coco– in which he already evidences the narrative mastery that his future novels would confirm. Retrieved from his personal archives, this correspondence combines several simultaneous stories: that of a South American traveler discovering Europe; of a tireless moviegoer who saves every last penny in order to be able to buy cinema and theater tickets; of a beginning scriptwriter, a polyglot gaining a fresh awareness of his own language; and finally, what is perhaps the most relevant, of the detailed metamorphosis that turned Coco into the writer Manuel Puig.
