One and the Universe

Ernesto Sabato

NON FICTION, 1945. SEIX BARRAL NEW EDITION, 2006. 144 PAGES.

One and the Universe, the first book published by Ernesto Sabato, won first prize in the poetry competition run by the Municipality of Buenos Aires in 1945. The jury included Vicente Barbieri, Francisco Luis Bernárdez, Leónidas Barletta, Ricardo Molinari and Adolfo Bioy Casares. The title is self-explanatory: in its brief, concise, polished epigrams and verbal capsules, Sabato systematically, alphabetically and often ironically presents a vast catalogue of themes that range from everyday experience to appreciations of the cosmos. His explorations are typified by the unimpeachable human honesty, critical lucidity and a wide-ranging vision that ensured Sabato a central role in the literary world. Right from his first, exceptionally mature work, Sabato was laying the foundations for his greatness.
