NOVEL. EL ATENEO, 2010. 256 PAGES.
This surprising novel by Fernanda García Lao opens with a farewell. Eusebia announces to her son Demetrio that she is going to leave soon and will probably never come back. This takes place in a remote hotel on the coast of Buenos Aires Province. From then on stories interweave and Eusebia's absence is like that of a ghost who holds the key to everything. She has followed in the footsteps of her heroines, the wanderers of the title, women who didn't feel tied down to a place or home, whose life stories - compiled and altered by Eusebia herself - finish the work. With an exquisite prose style and notably crafted transparency, García Lao has created a text that grips the reader from the first page with its subtly constructed characters and atmospheres. She creates a very personal world in which feminine desires find a new form of expression. Wanderers won a special mention in the Letrasur International Prize for the Novel 2010, whose jury was made up of Martín Kohan, Claudia Piñeiro and Juan Sasturain.
