Vienna, beginning of the twentieth century. Friedl Aichinger, a young violinist and disciple of Arnold Schönberg, finds herself unwittingly involved in the historic slaughter and burning of the House of Justice. During the fracas a policeman on a horse brutally slashes her arm. Added to this misfortune is the collapse of her marriage to Harald, a brilliant music critic whose career is interrupted by an unfounded accusation of anti-Semitism, and Ethel, a prodigious student who Friedl is irrepressibly jealous of and who will end up taking Harald away from her.

Friedl decides to give up everything she once held dear, and her country, which has been annexed by Germany and which she abandons, sinking in a sea of mediocrity in a place where no one knows her name or speaks her language, where she is far away from Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg, Alma Mahler, Karl Kraus, the Wittgensteins and the many other celebrities populating this vibrant, well-crafted novel.
