The Silentiary

Antonio Di Benedetto

NOVEL, 1964. EDITION BY ADRIANA HIDALGO EDITORA 2022. 192 PAGES

First published in 1964, The Silentiary continues the narrative soliloquy begun with Zama in 1956 and prolonged in The Suicides, published in 1966, forming a sort of trilogy due to the stylistic and thematic unity that governs them.

A nameless character enclosed in his persecutory universe, harassed by the noise of the outside world, and who only manages to eternalize the torture when he decides to neutralize its causes, is an eminent figure among the many that are outlined in the unmistakable landscape of his stories. From the cosmic abandonment of Zama to the methodical inventory of the circumstances and reasons that can legitimize suicide, Di Benedetto's man lives cornered by the destructive noise of the world.

El Diario Review

«With the re-publication of The Silentiary and his main works, Di Benedetto's moment of consecration has arrived... Because of the themes he deals with and his wise artistic elaboration, the scope of his work is universal.»
Clarín

«A novel of ideas, thoughtful, of which are never finished because new nuances are always found, as in every self-respecting classic. And with a portentous domain of language, which overflows intelligence in each line and invites re-reading».

El Diario

«One of the central works of Argentine literature.»
Rolling Stone

«Di Benedetto's narrative prose is undoubtedly the most original of the century in the Spanish language.»
Juan José Saer
