After many nights studying hard at the Library of Congress, exhaustively reading different letters, memories and files, Daniel Balmaceda has published Espadas y corazones (Hearts and Swords), his first book. It all began back in 1999 when the journalist worked at a weekly paper that, knowing of his interest in history, tasked him with writing an article on the 25th of May, 1810 during the May Revolution that resulted in Argentina's independence from Spain. Fascinated with the topic, he continued his research. Thus it was that Balmaceda embarked upon a prolific and brilliant career in historical literature.
This book, which readers have made into a classic, contains anecdotes about the men and women who defined the course of Argentinian history. From an instruction manual for killing Rosas to a letter from Sarmiento offering advice to a young man about to get married, each chapter delves beyond the hard data to convey -in a style that Balmaceda has mastered to perfection- the little details that humanize well-known figures such as San Martín, Belgrano, Dorrego, Lavalle and Quiroga, among others.
