La Novena

Marcela Serrano

NOVEL. ALFAGUARA, 2016. 256 PAGES

Following an absurd misunderstanding, Miguel Flores, a university student, is arrested at a protest march against the Pinochet dictatorship. After spending a few days in a local jail, he is sent to an agricultural area close to the capital but isolated from all forms of political activity.

With no money or support and forced to sign in every day at the local police station, he spends his days alone, just barely getting by. His presence generates fear or hatred among the locals, except Amelia, a middle aged widow who owns a large farm called La Novena. She takes in the exile, opens up the doors of her house to him and with them a social and cultural world that represents everything he hates. Little by little, however, their budding relationship sees him question his prejudices and his feelings evolve from deep hatred to attraction, with a permanent bond forming between him and the older woman. But chance and Miguel's political activities will lead to an extremely painful turn of events that has irreparable consequences for them both.

In this moving story, Marcela Serrano introduces us to the emotional world of generations of women forced to deal with the trauma of being betrayed and betraying in turn.
