At the Mad Hatter's Table

Alberto Manguel

ESSAY. EMECÉ, 2006. 256 PAGES.

The title of this book refers to the famous Erasmus essay. For him, madness, that “joyful aberration of the mind,” explained the many nonsensical activities in which humans get involved, like war, love, politics, art. There have been madmen in every epoch, and ours is no exception, Nuevo elogio de la locura takes us in a world of literary and historical characters, a world of artists and works permeated with sublime madness, such as the prophesies of medieval soothsayers that used to fascinate Erasmus; the oneiric world of Lewis Carroll; Pinocchio, the rebel hero; Barthes and the eroticism of the text; the wild genius of Gaudí;Van Gogh and his desperate landscapes; the seductive attraction of the unknown in Stevenson; Sherlock Holmes and his faith in the Goddess of Reason.
