Gioconda Belli

NOVEL. SEIX BARRAL, 2018. 368 PAGES.

1847. Charles Choiseul de Praslin, a noble in the court of Louis Phillip I of Orléans, King of France, finds himself accused of the terrible murder of his wife, whom he was cheating on with their children's nursemaid. On the urging of the King, a close friend, De Praslin fakes his suicide and flees to New York. From there, he continues his journey south to the mountains of northern Nicaragua, a fertile, vibrant landscape where he meets a captivating woman, the young widow Margarita Arauz, known as the White Rose. Las fiebres de la memoria is a novel of love, mystery and adventure that teaches us that sometimes, when it seems that life has nothing left in store, a second chance might still be awaiting us elsewhere. The author of a successful long seller, La mujer habitada (The Inhabited Woman), in this novel Gioconda Belli explores the life of the grandmother she used to visit in a small town lost in the foggy mountains of the north of the country. After researching her family history, Belli has created an enormously beautiful story set in the 19th century about a major scandal in the French court and the origins of her own family.
