This novel brings Manuel Puig’s fiction to unexpected places. Here, we are presented with the bitter, destructive encounter of two forms of New York solitude: a sick Argentinian and his carer, an American, both suffering from the absence of the woman they waited for, rejected or lost forever. The difficulty they have in establishing the trust that must come before affection is the central theme at first. In this confrontation, each character offers up revelations about themselves while facts are progressively revealed to the reader and the characters with one personality projecting itself, reinventing itself, revealing itself or leaching from the other. The aspect that will perhaps most attract and grip the reader is the mastery with which Puig introduces new material into his work – everyday North American life in the character of Larry – and the polished, sovereign art – verbal rigour and piercing humanity – with which, in a strict format of dialogues and silences, he reveals the deepest traits of people in whom we can hardly fail to see some aspect of ourselves.
