Pubis angelical

Manuel Puig

NOVEL. SEIX BARRAL, 1979. 288 PAGES.

Pubis Angelical tells one story folded into two parallel planes in time, each told by different areas of the protagonist’s mind. In the real world, it tells the tale of a sick woman in a clinic whose romantic life reflects the travails of Argentina in the second half of the twentieth century. Simultaneously, there are her unconscious fantasies, a fantastical journey that begins in the thirties in Central Europe, continues in Hollywood and stretches into the future featuring elements of romantic novels, parapsychology and science fiction.

The two narratives in this novel arise from the same reality: fundamentally they are about a ruptured love affair and betrayal, a woman used and cast aside. Pubis Angelical can be read as a thriller but it is also an unflinching examination of the moral hypocrisy of our time, which crushes the weakest among us.
