From the Diary I Never Kept

Hernán Rivera Letelier

MEMOIR. PRH, 2024. 134 PAGES

Hernán Rivera Letelier begins his memoirs with this book about his childhood. It tells the tale of his life as the fourth child of an evangelical family at the Algorta camp whose father worked at a saltpetre mine and mother died tragically from a spider bite. It describes flights of the imagination in the driest desert in the world, the myths that shaped him, his first loves and epiphanies, beginning hard labour while still just a boy, the lives of the miners, and much more, all tied together with a touching sense of humour and tenderness.

From the Diary I Never Kept brings Rivera Letelier's unmistakable sensibility and gaze to bear on his early years, revealing the human backdrop that inspired the winner of the National Award for Literature to instil such depth into his character

«Hernán Rivera Letelier has conjured some of the most unforgettable characters in Chilean literature on the vast stage of northern Chile»
