The Regal Lemon Tree

Juan José Saer

NOVEL. SEIX BARRAL, 2010. 238 PAGES

A family who live on the Santa Fe coast meet on the morning of the final day of the year to prepare for the celebrations that night, when a lamb will be roasted. Two absences afflict the central character in the novel: that of his wife who has refused to go to the party saying that she is in mourning for their son; and that of the son himself, whose small figure emerges time and again in his memory. Doubly haunted by the death and absence, the story becomes increasingly dense, giving the evening meal the feel of a ritual banquet.

El limonero real (The Regal Lemon Tree) is a novel about light and shade, whose games and alternating perspectives mark the passing of time. The novel is made up of spots that eventually construct a figure made up of obsessive descriptions of the most trivial acts, sensations and perceptions, flavours and tastes.
