The Event

Juan José Saer

NOVEL. SEIX BARRAL, 1988. 252 PAGES.

La ocasión (The Event) tells the tale of Bianco, a master of the occult who must leave Europe hounded by what he calls "the conspiracy of the positivists of Paris”, settling on the bleak plains of the Argentine Pampas of the 19th Century.

The more material goods that Bianco accumulates, the more he seems to lose his powers. Obsessed by the unsettling figure of a woman, he slips progressively into a kind of delirium.

WINNER OF THE NADAL PRIZE IN 1987

«Juan José Saer's agile and poetic writing makes La ocasión [...] a fascinating novel about the madness and fall of a man»

Ariane Singer, Le Monde des Livres

«Here, once again, Saer offers a novel whose formal perfection is matched only by the finesse of the images that carry it.»

Guillaume Contré, Le Matricule des Anges
