The clouds

Juan José Saer

NOVEL. SEIX BARRAL, 2011. 1769 PAGES.

Las nubes (The Clouds) tells the story of a young psychiatrist who takes five insane people to a clinic, travelling from Santa Fe to Buenos Aires. With him go thirty-six characters: mental patients, an escort of soldiers, experts and prostitutes who cross the Pampas, meeting all kinds of obstacles on their way. There they meet Josesito, a cacique who spreads panic with a violin on his shoulder, whom one of the patients sees as the unifier of the American races.

This false epic occurs in 1804 before the English invasions and the May Revolution, a seminal moment in the history of Argentina, before the concept of the nation has even appeared.
