Buenos Aires 1894. Detective Craig has just died and the young investigator Sigmundo Salvatorio, the protagonist of The Paris Enigma, is left in charge of the agency. He must immediately take his first case on his own: the poet and journalist Jerónimo Seguí asks him to find a friend, an antiquarian, who has disappeared. When his body surfaces, the clues guide Salvatorio to a group of “garden philosophers”, who tried in the past to replace the famous landscaper Carlos Thays, in the design of large green spaces in the city.
What is the significance of parks in a culture? Should the gardens replicate Eden, or should they be ordered and geometric, like the gardens of Atlantis? Is it possible that these theories have inspired a series of crimes? A psychiatrist, an antiquarian, a poet, a hunter and a rich businessman will try to comprehend these quandaries. At the centre of the mystery is Baltasar Dux Olaya, the lord of salt, and his daughter Irene, who is very beautiful, visionary, and insane.
This is an exceptional novel, in which the crimes occur in an age when the great parks and gardens of Buenos Aires are taking shape.
