The Sixth Lamp

Pablo De Santis

NOVEL. DESTINO, 2005. 253 PAGES.

This is the story of Silvio Balestri, an Italian architect who arrives in New York in 1915 to design skyscrapers. Over the years he rises through the ranks of a big company, while conceiving his life’s work: Ziggurat, a skyscraper designed to unite Balestri’s obsession with an architecture capable of containing a meaning with the lofty heights of the tower blocks of Manhattan. However, his ambitions clash with a sect of architects controlling all building work above the 27th floor who see in Balestri their enemy. As architecture with meaning triumphs in Europe with the rise of Fascism, Balestri’s theoretical writings and skyscraper designs, despite himself, turn him into the dark master of the architects of the Reich.
