The Limits of Love

Walter Riso

SELF-HELP. NEW EDITION PLANETA, 2018. 176 PAGES.

In a culture in which too much emphasis has been placed on an unlimited commitment to love, our relationships have become our principle means of self-expression. Exaggerated sentimentalism means that we have ignored the personal sacrifice that comes with delivering oneself so completely. However, love does not justify everything.

There is another way to understand love: a way of loving ourselves, avoiding self-negation and absolutist idealization; it is possible to love without anxiety and without compromising the vital principles that define us. Mature love integrates love for others with love for oneself, without there being any conflict of interests.

Whoever said that to love you have to deny yourself to the detriment of your own life projects? ‘Love doesn’t mean that you have to deny yourself’; that is the maxim.
