Perramus. Tooth by Tooth

Juan Sasturain

GRAPHIC NOVEL. EDICIONES DE LA FLOR, 2006. 177 PAGES.

Written and drawn throughout 1988 and 1989, Tooth by Tooth – the fourth and final instalment in the saga – is undoubtedly the most gratuitously adventure-filled of the Perramus stories. Rife with ambiguous humour and spectacular chases, the book also makes perhaps excessive references to historical or so-called real-life characters.

Starting with Gardel, of course, with his glorious, devastating smile, an emblematic icon of mislaid happiness that becomes the focus of the story.

“It would be redundant to say that nothing in Perramus is or aspires

to be true: Borges isn’t just still alive, in the previous instalment he won

the Nobel Prize and this one also features characters called Frank Sinatra,

Fidel Castro, García Márquez, María Kodama and Osvaldo Pugliese

– among others – who don’t necessarily act like their flesh and blood

counterparts. No fictional enterprise can save us from the tragedy

of history, but the act of making the attempt, the journey itself

–Cavafy’s ‘Ithaca’ is quoted at the end – is justification in itself,

providing the only meaning possible. And I also believe that this

is worth thinking of Perramus – the comic Perramus – too.”
